Don Tomlinson, max20’s MD, has just returned from a life on the ocean wave, sailing aboard the Tall Ship, Sorlandet in the Baltic Sea. This was not only out of a sense of adventure and perhaps madness but also to raise funds for a little known charity - Max Appeal.
Max Appeal was founded by parents of children diagnosed with DiGeorge Syndrome/VCFS/a 22q11.2 deletion. It is the national charity for children with DiGeorge syndrome and velo-cardio-facial syndrome, usually caused by the genetic defect 22q11.2 deletion (this is the ’post code’ of the missing genes). For Max (the baby the charity is named after) this meant complex heart defects and a poor immune system which led to his death at 4 months old from septicaemia.
You may not have heard of this condition but it affects about 1 in 2,000 of the population and is the most common cause of congenital heart defects after Down’s syndrome.
Please visit http://www.maxappeal.org.uk/ for further information and to read first-hand, stories about the people affected by this illness.
Shortly we will be creating a new fundraising page on JustGiving.com - in the meantime you are welcome to visit www.justgiving.com/dontomlinson for further information and a chance to donate should you wish.
